The main city market
The main city market is one of the favorite places of the people of Rijeka. The lattice construction and facades are decorated with relief depictions of vegetables and fruits exude a special charm. The rapid growth of the city required the expansion of the market, so the main building was finalized in 1916. Fountains, decorations on the facade and a skillfully painted sea world are undoubtedly part of one of the most attractive markets in the region. Stone crabs, octopuses, fish and shellfish leave the impression of being alive, inviting passers-by to approach the fish market, where they will always find something for their taste.
City Tower
Built in the Middle Ages, probably on the foundations of the late antique coastal city gate, it is one of the symbols of the city of Rijeka. Even today, it dominates the central part of the Promenade, and in the past it was a passable tower through which one enters the fortified city. At the top of the dome of the tower, at a height of 30 m, there is a replica of a sculpture of a two-headed eagle from Rijeka weighing 270 kg.
Croatian National Theater
The tradition of continuous theatrical life in the city of Rijeka is longer than two centuries. Since 1991, the theater has received the status of a national theater, and in 1994 its current name. The figural sculptures and ornamental works were made by the famous Venetian sculptor August Benvenuti, and the ceiling paintings by the painter Franz Matsch in collaboration with the even more famous brothers Gustav and Ernest Klimt. It is interesting that technological discoveries were placed in this building - the first electric light bulb and the first telephone in the city!
Capuchin Church of Our Lady of Lourdes
The Capuchin Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, with its magnificent neo-Gothic façade decorated with mosaics and ornate stone decoration, dominates Žabica Square in Rijeka. During the renovation in 2006, five new stained glass windows were placed in the side naves of the church, depicting the figures of Croatian saints and the blessed; they are work, as well as the restoration of old stained glass windows by academic painter Robert Mijalić.
Cathedral of St. Vitus
The cathedral was built on the site of a demolished church dedicated to the patron saint of Rijeka, Sveti Vid. Construction lasted intermittently for a hundred years, and the dome and oratories for monks on the first floor were built by the Gothic architect Bernardin Martnuzzi in 1727. This representative building has points of contact with the Venetian church of Sta Maria della Salute.
The pier of Rijeka
The pier of the main port pool is popularly called "molo longo", because of its 1707 m length, and today it is used as a passenger terminal and coastal promenade. The biggest undertaking of construction on the breakwater was the Quarnaro baths, built in 1913 and proclaimed the best beach in the Monarchy.
Opatija
Located at the foot of the mountain and nature park Učka, it provides an excellent choice for vacation in summer and winter. Beautiful nature, parks, old Austro-Hungarian villas, promenades and beaches have been attracting tourists from Europe and the world for 160 years. As many as two parks are protected as monuments of garden architecture, and are specific for Japanese camellias and bamboo and banana trees.
Rijeka carnival
Organized by the Tourist Board of the City of Rijeka, it was first held in 1982 and "placed" Rijeka among the most important European carnival cities. The fusion of the European Citizens' Carnival based on historical and cultural customs and elements of folklore and mythology is one of the more attractive events in the region.
Korzo – the heart of Rijeka
Korzo has been used since the early 19th century. century began to form in the form in which we know it today, as the main promenade and meeting place of the people of Rijeka and a training ground for the construction of representative palaces in the forms of alternating styles: classicism, historicism, secession and modernity.
Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary
It is the largest pilgrimage center in western Croatia. The origin is connected with the tradition of the miraculous transfer of the Nazareth house and its stay on Trsat (1291-1294). The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the oldest Marian shrine in Croatia, and it is in it that numerous historical figures are buried, such as members of the Frankopan family, thanks to whom the church was founded.
Ivan Kobler
The narrow passage separating a series of houses on the east side is the remnant of a typical street of medieval proportions. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Rijeka Paper Factory, the oldest in this part of Europe, a fountain with a paper press was erected on Ivan Kobler Square in 1974, according to a project by Rijeka architect Igor Emili, for the paper originating from the factory.
Trsat Fortress
It was first mentioned as the seat of the parish in 1288. From prehistoric times, there was a Liburnian observatory from where the road from the interior to the sea was controlled. Gradina is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast, in which the features of early medieval town planning have been preserved, and from it there is a colossal view of the city and the bay of Rijeka.
